Abstract: A variety of electric machine designs have been introduced for electric vehicle application.  Amongst all of them similar issues of insulation systems, compatibility, and reliability exist, especially for the harsh duties, energy densities and inverter applications.  In this presentation, we will discuss the variety of insulation systems and considerations that exist, including a discussion of some of the new insulation materials that are being developed that will also impact the industrial community.

Bio: Howard W Penrose, Ph.D., CMRP is the Vice President of Dreisilker Electric Motors, Inc. and the owner of SUCCESS by DESIGN(r) publishing.  He is the founding chair of the Chicago DEIS Chapter, a past Chair of the Chicago Section IEEE, and is presently the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE DEIS Website (http://www.ieee.org/go/deis).  He also serves as the Director of Member Services for the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP) as well as serving as the treasurer of SMRP Chicagoland.  He has served on the development of electric vehicle motors for General Motors as well as winning four consecutive GM/UAW People Make Quality Happen Awards for energy, reliability best practices, maintenance best practices and the development of the GM motor management program.  He has consulted to the US DOE, AMTRAK, US Steel, and others, as well as being invited world-wide to consult on motor systems and testing technologies including motor circuit analysis and electrical/motor current signature analysis.  He is the author of a number of books including the Axiom Business Book of the Year, "Physical Asset Management for the Executive (Caution: Do Not Read This If You Are On An Airplane)" and a Foreword Book of the Year Finalist, "Electrical Motor Diagnostics: 2nd Edition."
